Why Choose Bamboo Flooring?

Few flooring products can match the outstanding features of BambooWhile most individuals, retailers and manufacturers talk about Bamboo in the same context as hardwood, it is actually not a wood at all but a grass.

There are four basic benefits to using Bamboo as your flooring of choice:

  • Hardness; bamboo is harder than oak,

  • Durability and Strength; difficult to scratch or dent,

  • Beauty: it has a very rich patina and markings,

  • Environmental; it is environmentally friendly, as a grass it grows back after harvesting.

Strength and Durability:

When we think about bamboo we generally envision a soft and pliable material, primarily because we see many cane products where Bamboo is bent, curved and woven into a variety of products from chairs to baskets.  When the canes are young they are pliable, but with five years of growth they become very strong with a surface that is 25 percent harder than oak, currently the most common hardwood flooring species.  Compared to maple, Bamboo has a harder surface which makes it more durable and with a higher resistance to any impact applied.

A secondary advantage lies in Bamboo's thermal and moisture properties.  It expands and contracts less than 50 percent of most other hardwoods.  This makes bamboo the perfect material for geographic areas that have large swings in humidity and temperature throughout a year.

Colors and Grains:

Bamboo is marketed as four products;

  • Natural Blonde - Vertically Milled

  • Natural Blonde - Horizontally Milled

  • Carbonized - Vertically Milled

  • Carbonized - Horizontally Milled

The natural color of Bamboo is a blonde hue.  This coloring defines and highlights the unique characteristics of Bamboo's grain and growth pattern - remember it is a grass and hence the grain and growth patterns are substantially different than those of a wood.  The carbonized coloring comes from processing the Bamboo by smoking the cane.  The smoking process gives the Bamboo a deeper coloring, although still light compared to many hardwoods, it is classified as a amber or caramel hue.  The carbonizing colors the bamboo throughout, it is not a surface staining.

Bamboo can be milled vertically or horizontally.  Vertical milling provides a very even grain and color consistency.  With vertical milling the individual joints in the Bamboo, called nodes, are not as well defined as with horizontal milling.  With horizontal milling the joints or nodes are very well defined which creates an aesthetically pleasing or enhanced grain.

Environmental Qualities:

Bamboo can be harvested every five to seven years and because it is a grass and not a tree harvesting the Bamboo does not kill the plant, while harvesting wood kills the tree, in most cases.  Bamboo yields more than 25 percent more than any species of hardwood and is one of the fastest growing plants anywhere in the world.

Secondarily, Bamboo is a very hardy grass.  Even in geographic areas where animals have overgrazed the landscape, bamboo will flourish.  Bamboo grows without the need of heavy amounts of fertilizer or pesticides and does well in third world countries who have not adopted modern techniques of agriculture.

If you want a beautiful, luxurious floor that will last your many decades to come, your choice should be Bamboo.  Overall, it is environmentally friendly, extremely strong and very durable.  It is difficult to ask for much more in a flooring product.

All Bamboo is imported and there is no international quality standards for Bamboo flooring, that is why it is important to purchase from manufacturers that have a North American identity and who are committed to quality and will stand behind their products.
